Sometimes
called High Definition Surveying
( HDS ) or ground based Lidar, this technology can create
3 dimensional 'point clouds' of thousands of data points which
are collected in a matter of minutes.
This point
cloud can be used to create the more familiar products that
most of our clients are used to working with, such as detailed
elevations, 2D topographical plans or sections.
In addition,
3D computer models and fly throughs can also be produced.
As a non-contact or 'remote' instrument, site access may only
be required once and it may be possible to avoid hazardous
areas.
Laser
scanning has many advantages for modeling complex plant, e.g.
offshore platforms, oil and gas, chemical plants, power stations,
refineries, storage tanks etc..
- Comparisons
between existing infrastructure and proposed installations
for clash detection is made considerably easier with the
technology.
- Lower
design costs.
- Reduce
the project design time
- Fast
and accurate data capture.
- Completeness
of survey. Reduced need for site re-visits. Increased safety.
- In
hazardous environments, laser scanner can be remotely operated.
